A switchboard may need repair or upgrading when it has ceramic fuses, limited safety-switch coverage, crowding, damage, poor labelling or insufficient capacity for planned equipment. Heat, buzzing, scorching, burning smells and repeated tripping need prompt attention. Age alone does not determine the solution: inspection and testing should establish whether the right scope is a repair, protective-device work, circuit changes or a broader upgrade.
Treat heat, buzzing and burning smells as urgent warnings
A hot switchboard enclosure, burning smell, buzzing, visible scorching, melting, sparking or smoke can indicate a fault or unsafe condition. Keep people away and stop using affected equipment where it is safe to do so. Call 000 for smoke, fire, a serious electric shock or immediate danger.
Do not remove the cover, touch damaged equipment or repeatedly reset a device. Call a licensed electrician promptly when the danger is within the property. If a fallen powerline or damaged network asset is involved, stay well clear and contact 000 and the electricity distributor.
An older fuse box is a reason to assess, not an automatic verdict
Ceramic fuses, limited safety-switch coverage, unclear labels, crowding or evidence of earlier alterations are reasons to arrange an assessment. The property’s age does not reveal the condition of every circuit or whether previous upgrades were completed.
Photograph only the closed switchboard for the first conversation. The electrician needs to inspect the board, protective devices, connected circuits and intended future loads. The result may be a targeted repair, new protection, circuit work or a broader replacement—not necessarily the largest option.
Safety-switch coverage must be checked circuit by circuit
Circuit breakers and safety switches perform different primary jobs. A modern-looking row of breakers does not confirm that each relevant circuit has suitable residual-current protection or that the devices operate correctly.
NSW Government home electrical-safety guidance explains that one safety switch may not protect every circuit. Ask the electrician to identify existing coverage, test the devices and explain any proposed changes without relying on the switchboard’s appearance alone.
New electrical loads can expose capacity and protection limits

Available supply, main switch capacity, board space, cable routes and load management all affect what is practical. Some supply changes may also require the electricity distributor or an appropriately accredited service provider. Give the electrician the exact equipment model and all other planned loads, not just the next appliance being installed.
A proper assessment connects the symptoms, circuits and future plan
Prepare the symptoms, approximate property age, known renovation history and equipment you expect to add. The electrician can then assess the switchboard condition, protection, space, supply, circuit arrangement and the loads relevant to the proposed work.
Testing should determine the recommendation. A replacement enclosure alone does not address every possible issue in connected circuits, and a single new device may not solve crowding, labelling, supply or damaged-component problems elsewhere in the board.
Use the warning signs to choose the next step
The table is a triage guide, not a remote diagnosis. Several observations can have more than one cause, and the same visible switchboard can perform differently under test.
Do not open the board to collect more detail. Report what can be seen from the closed enclosure and whether the condition is active, intermittent or linked to particular equipment.

Ask for a quote that explains the assessment
A switchboard quote should state the observed condition, proposed devices, circuit work, labelling, expected power interruption, testing, access requirements and exclusions. Ask how planned future loads have been considered and whether supply-side work is outside the electrician’s scope.

- Send a photo of the closed board. Include the property type and approximate age without removing any cover.
- List symptoms and recent changes. Note tripping, heat, noises, partial power or equipment added before the issue began.
- Provide future equipment details. Share model numbers for EV charging, cooking, heating, cooling, solar or battery plans.
- Ask what testing will decide. Request the reason for each proposed component or circuit change.
- Confirm the handover. Agree on labelling, downtime, testing, documentation and any work excluded from the quote.
