A safety switch usually trips because it has detected current leaking from a circuit. The fault may be in a plug-in appliance, a moisture-affected fitting, fixed wiring or connected equipment. If there is no sign of fire, heat, damage, water or electric shock, one controlled reset can help narrow down the problem. If it trips again, leave it off and arrange licensed fault finding.
First, check what actually tripped
A safety switch is also called a residual current device, or RCD. It monitors the current flowing through a circuit and disconnects the supply when it detects leakage that may create an electric-shock risk. NSW Government guidance explains that a safety switch protects people, while a circuit breaker primarily protects wiring from overload and short circuit.
Look at the label beside the device without opening the switchboard. A safety switch normally has a T or Test button and may be marked RCD or RCBO. An RCBO combines residual-current and overcurrent protection, so the appearance alone may not tell you why it operated. Note the label, which rooms lost power and whether one circuit or most of the property is affected.
Check for danger before trying a reset
Do not touch the switchboard or affected equipment if there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, unusual heat, visible damage, water near electrical equipment or evidence that someone received a shock. Keep people away. Call 000 for fire, a serious electric shock or immediate danger.
If a fitting, lead or appliance is wet, burnt, melted or damaged, do not unplug or test it. Stop using the area and call a licensed electrician. The NSW Government lists damaged cords, faulty appliances, household wiring and contact with water among common electric-shock hazards.
Use one controlled reset, not repeated attempts
When the area is dry and there are no danger signs, this limited process can help separate a portable-appliance problem from a fault that needs electrical testing. Do not remove a switchboard cover, touch exposed parts or bypass the safety switch.
Stop as soon as the device trips again. Repeated resetting can keep re-energising a fault and does not make the circuit safe.
- Record what happened. Note the time, weather, rooms without power and what appliances or equipment were operating immediately before the trip.
- Disconnect only safe portable appliances. Switch off and unplug accessible plug-in appliances on the affected circuit. Leave anything wet, hot, damaged or fixed-wired alone.
- Reset once. At the closed switchboard, move the tripped device fully to Off and then back to On. Some devices will not reset until they have first been moved completely to Off.
- Reconnect carefully. If power remains on, reconnect dry, undamaged portable appliances one at a time. If one item causes another trip, leave that item unplugged and do not keep testing it.
- Leave the circuit off if the trip returns. If the safety switch will not reset, trips before anything is reconnected or operates again later, arrange licensed electrical fault finding.
The timing of the trip can provide a useful clue
A trip pattern can help an electrician decide where to begin, but it cannot confirm the cause. Heating elements, outdoor equipment and faults affected by moisture may operate normally at one time and trip later under different conditions.
Share the observation rather than a diagnosis. For example, “it trips about five minutes after the dishwasher starts” is more useful than assuming the dishwasher must be replaced.

Common causes include appliances, moisture and fixed wiring
Plug-in appliances are only one possibility. A safety switch may operate because of a damaged lead, water entering an outdoor light or outlet, a fixed appliance, deteriorated wiring, a faulty fitting or leakage spread across several connected items. A trip after rain or when a heating appliance warms up is a clue, not proof.
Do not assume that the safety switch itself is faulty because it trips. Its job is to disconnect supply when it detects the condition it is designed to respond to. An electrician can isolate sections of the circuit and use test instruments to distinguish between the protective device, connected equipment and installation wiring.
The test button is maintenance, not fault finding
The NSW Government recommends testing home safety switches twice a year with the T or Test button. The protected circuit should lose power. If it does not, or the device will not reset after the test, contact a licensed electrician.
A successful button test confirms only the device’s basic tripping action. It does not prove that every circuit, appliance or connection is fault-free. Do not press the test button while trying to keep essential equipment running; plan for the brief power interruption first.
Know when to call now and what information to provide
Call promptly when repeated tripping is accompanied by buzzing, heat, scorch marks, a burning smell, partial power loss or damage around the switchboard. Call 000 for smoke, fire, a serious electric shock or immediate danger.
